In a significant political shift, former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Malami made the announcement in a statement titled “To the Good People of Kebbi and Fellow Nigerians”, posted on his verified social media account. He explained that the decision followed extensive consultations and personal reflection.
According to Malami, his defection is not driven by political ambition but by deep concern for Nigeria’s worsening security and economic challenges. He criticized the current administration, saying the country is in crisis due to rising insecurity and poor governance.
> “Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has invaded our communities—banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings are now part of daily life, while the government focuses more on politics than on protecting citizens,” he wrote.
Malami also lamented the soaring cost of living and increasing poverty, citing the sharp rise in food prices and unemployment.
> “The cost of basic goods has tripled, families can barely survive, and our youth have lost hope,” he stated.
He accused the federal government of prioritizing political loyalty over competence in key appointments, saying governance has taken a back seat.
> “Appointments and policies are now based on patronage rather than merit. I can no longer be part of a system that watches Nigerians suffer in silence,” he declared.
Explaining his decision to join the ADC, Malami said the party embodies the values of justice, inclusion, and national renewal. He expressed optimism that, with the support of Nigerians, the party can lead the country toward a more accountable and people-focused future.
> “Through this coalition and with the collective will of Nigerians, we can reshape the destiny of our nation,” he added.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Kebbi State, promising to be a stronger voice for their development and well-being.
Malami’s defection comes shortly after three PDP senators, led by Senator Adamu Aliero, moved to the APC in Kebbi State. His exit positions him as a significant opposition figure in the
