The Adamawa State Government has confirmed that six people have died following a suspected outbreak of Buruli ulcer, a rare but serious skin disease. This figure comes contrary to earlier reports that claimed eight deaths.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the confirmation was made after health officials carried out investigations in the affected communities. The authorities explained that while the situation is worrying, the number of fatalities has been verified to be six, not eight as earlier circulated.
Buruli ulcer, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, is known to affect the skin and soft tissue, leading to painful open sores if left untreated. Health experts warn that poor awareness, late detection, and limited access to medical care can worsen the impact of the disease.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the Adamawa Ministry of Health has begun sensitization campaigns and medical interventions in the affected areas. Residents have also been advised to report unusual skin swellings or sores to the nearest hospital for early treatment.
The state government has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to contain the spread of the infection and prevent further loss of lives.
