AFN Vice President Vows to Boost Grassroots Athletics Development in Nigeria

The newly inaugurated First Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Abubakar Ladan Zurmi, has pledged to drive a grassroots-focused strategy to revitalize athletics in the country.

Speaking to journalists in Gusau, Zamfara State, on Friday, Zurmi emphasized the importance of discovering and nurturing young talent at the foundational level. He revealed that the new AFN leadership is committed to organizing talent-hunt initiatives in primary and secondary schools across Nigeria.

> “Our mission is to identify and develop athletic talent starting from the grassroots. We plan to go across local governments, engaging communities, schools, and young people in organized competitions that will help shape responsible and disciplined athletes,” Zurmi stated.

Addressing the state of athletics in the Northwest region, Zurmi expressed concern about the slow pace of sports development. However, he assured that under his leadership, the zone will witness a new era of revival and growth.

> “We are determined to revamp athletics and other sporting activities across the Northwest. This includes securing sponsorships and collaborating with state governments to ensure sustained sports development,” he added.

Zurmi also called for unity among members and stakeholders of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, urging collective efforts toward achieving a vibrant and competitive athletics ecosystem nationwide.
