Akwa Ibom State begins its selection trials for the second Niger Delta Games (NDG) Edo 2026, following the conclusion of local government trials. The state-level trials, scheduled to run for five days, start with Taekwondo taking centre stage at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the Taekwondo events saw a high-tempo, competitive showcase, with eight out of twelve registered fighters emerging as state representatives. The selected team includes four male and four female athletes who will represent Akwa Ibom at the games.
Speaking on the trials, the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, represented by the state’s Director of Coaching, Mrs. Catherine Ewa, praised the athletes for their energy and skill. Mediaplusng.com reports that she highlighted the competitiveness and potential of the young fighters, saying the high standard of performance reflects a bright future for sports in the state.
Excited about her selection, female fighter Victory Charles expressed her determination to make her state proud. “I’m thrilled to be selected and will represent Akwa Ibom to the best of my ability,” she said, thanking the organizers for providing a platform to showcase her talent.
The second Niger Delta Games, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission and organized by Dunamis-Icon Limited, will take place from February 20 to 27 in Edo State, with athletes from all nine Niger Delta states competing across multiple sports disciplines.
