Alleged Airfare Hike: AON Challenges FCCPC Interim Report, Rejects Claims of Price Manipulation

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) strongly criticizes the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) over its interim report alleging that domestic airlines engaged in airfare hikes during the 2025 Yuletide season.

Mediaplusng.com reports that the FCCPC recently disclosed that it uncovered evidence suggesting local airlines manipulated ticket prices during the peak festive travel period. The disclosure, made on February 26, triggers immediate backlash from airline operators who describe the findings as misleading and potentially damaging to the aviation sector.

In a formal reaction, AON describes the Commission’s claims as harmful to the survival of domestic carriers and based on what it calls a flawed understanding of aviation economics. The association insists that airfare pricing is influenced by complex operational realities, including fuel costs, foreign exchange volatility, aircraft maintenance expenses, insurance premiums, airport charges, and seasonal demand fluctuations.

Mediaplusng.com gathers that AON’s spokesperson and Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiorah Okonkwo, states that while domestic airlines respect government institutions and regulatory authorities, they will firmly resist conclusions that are not grounded in industry realities. He emphasizes that the aviation industry operates under unique cost structures that require dynamic pricing models, especially during high-demand travel periods such as Christmas and New Year holidays.

Okonkwo further argues that the FCCPC lacks the specialized technical expertise required to fully interpret airline pricing mechanisms. According to him, the interim report appears to oversimplify how ticket fares are determined and does not adequately reflect the operational pressures airlines face. He maintains that pricing decisions are largely driven by supply-demand dynamics and cost recovery imperatives rather than deliberate manipulation.

Mediaplusng.com understands that AON views the Commission’s public disclosure as an attempt that could erode consumer confidence and create unnecessary tension between regulators and industry players. The association reiterates its commitment to transparency and compliance but warns against regulatory narratives that may discourage investment in Nigeria’s fragile aviation sector.

Industry analysts note that airfare spikes during peak travel seasons are common globally, reflecting limited seat availability and increased passenger demand. Aviation stakeholders argue that structural challenges in Nigeria, including high aviation fuel costs and currency pressures, further complicate fare stability.

As discussions continue, AON calls for constructive engagement with the FCCPC to clarify misconceptions and ensure that regulatory oversight supports rather than undermines the sustainability of domestic airlines. The association affirms its readiness to provide data-driven explanations to policymakers while safeguarding the operational viability of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
