Amnesty International has equipped journalists from Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, and Oyo States with essential skills to improve human rights reporting in Nigeria’s Southwest region.

Speaking at a two-day capacity-building workshop in Ibadan, Oyo State, Amnesty International’s representative, Anne Chukwunwike, emphasized that the organization’s mission in Nigeria is not to fight the government but to expose and challenge human rights violations.

“Our goal is to protect the rights of Nigerians and ensure justice is served. We rely on research, advocacy, and the power of the media to amplify the voices of those who are oppressed,” Chukwunwike said.

The workshop, themed “Strengthening Human Rights Reporting in the Southwest,” focused on equipping media professionals with practical tools and strategies for effective reporting on human rights issues.

Michael Christian, Amnesty International’s Social Media Communications Officer, described journalists as key drivers of social change. He urged participants to report human rights issues ethically, noting that responsible journalism has the power to shape public opinion, influence policies, and promote accountability.

Veteran investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, shared personal insights on the challenges and risks involved in exposing human rights abuses in Nigeria. He encouraged journalists to stay courageous and uphold the truth, even in the face of impunity.

Media veteran, Richard Akinnola, highlighted the importance of fact-checking and thorough investigations in human rights journalism. Kabiru Danladi also advised journalists to avoid gratification journalism, warning that compromising integrity undermines the role of the press in society.

The workshop aimed to strengthen media capacity to report human rights violations accurately and responsibly, fostering greater accountability and justice in Nigeria.
