Nigeria’s political landscape is drawing heightened attention as the All Progressives Congress, APC, intensifies preparations for its 2026 National Convention, with key stakeholders outlining strategies, expectations, and internal processes ahead of the major event.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, is meeting with journalists in Abuja to provide insights into the party’s readiness and communication framework for the convention scheduled to hold from March 27 to 28.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the high-level engagement is taking place at the Transcorp Hilton, where media executives and political correspondents are gathering to receive official briefings on logistics, coordination, and messaging.

Mohammed Idris, who serves as Co-Chairman of the Convention’s Media and Publicity Committee, is outlining the party’s communication strategy, emphasizing transparency, organization, and effective dissemination of information before, during, and after the convention.

The Minister is also detailing logistical arrangements, including accreditation of delegates, media coverage structure, security coordination, and venue management, aimed at ensuring a smooth and credible national convention.

According to Mediaplusng.com, Idris underscores the importance of projecting a strong democratic image, noting that the APC remains committed to internal democracy, unity, and inclusive participation across all levels of the party.

Meanwhile, the APC leadership confirms that a consensus approach will be adopted in selecting national officers during the convention, a move aimed at fostering unity and avoiding internal disputes.

Mary Ikoku, Assistant Secretary for Media and Publicity, explains that the consensus model is designed to strengthen cohesion within the party, while also reflecting ongoing consultations among stakeholders across various regions.

However, she notes that the party has not reached a final decision regarding how elective positions at the primary level will be conducted, indicating that such decisions may depend on prevailing political realities in different states.

Party officials suggest that this adaptive approach allows the APC to respond effectively to local dynamics while maintaining a unified national structure ahead of future elections.

The ongoing media engagement is also expected to feature contributions from top party figures, including members of the 2026 National Convention Central Coordination Committee.

Among those anticipated at the meeting are senior party leaders, committee chairpersons, and representatives from various geopolitical zones, all contributing to shaping the convention’s final structure.

The Governor of Yobe State, alongside other influential stakeholders, is expected to participate in the discussions, reflecting the significance of the convention in determining the party’s future direction.

Political analysts view the APC’s preparations as a critical step toward consolidating internal unity and positioning the party ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.

The adoption of a consensus model, in particular, is seen as a strategic move to minimize contestation and strengthen party cohesion, although it may also attract debates on inclusiveness and competitiveness.

As the convention approaches, observers are closely monitoring how the APC balances internal democracy with political strategy, especially in selecting leaders who will steer the party in the coming years.

The convention is expected to produce a new or reaffirmed leadership structure, set policy directions, and reinforce the party’s national agenda as it prepares for future political contests.

For now, the briefing by the Minister of Information signals the party’s commitment to organization, communication, and stakeholder engagement as it moves toward one of its most significant gatherings in recent times.
