Bandits have kidnapped Ahmed Mohammed, popularly known as Barrister Ahmed Lawyer, a Commissioner with the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission, along with his driver, former SUBEB Chairman Mohammed Bawa Niworu, and several travellers in Mashegu, Niger State. The abduction happened in the early hours of Monday, September 29, along the Zugurma–Ibbi–New Bussa road near Ibbi National Park. According to Mediaplusng.com, the victims were returning from Borgu when their vehicle was abandoned by the roadside with their mobile phones left inside.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the attackers blocked the highway just before a police checkpoint and ambushed motorists along the Ibbi–Bussa route. A police tactical team engaged the gunmen in a shootout, repelling the attack, but one officer sustained gunshot injuries. Mediaplusng.com reports that at least three Sharon buses filled with passengers were also hijacked and driven away to an unknown destination.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesman, SP Wasiu Abiodun, who said a police patrol vehicle was riddled with bullets during the clash. He added that more tactical teams have been deployed, working with security agencies and local vigilantes, to track the kidnappers and rescue the victims. Mediaplusng.com notes that investigations are ongoing, while security operatives intensify efforts to secure the safe release of all abducted persons.
