Bandits Attack Kabe Village Hours After Governor Bago’s Condolence Visit in Niger

Bandits attack Kabe village in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State late on the same day Governor Umaru Bago visits the Borgu Emirate Council to condole with residents over rising insecurity in the area.

The attack happens around 10:00 p.m., when armed men riding several motorcycles storm the village and loot food items and valuables from residents, Mediaplusng.com reports.

A community source confirms that a 75-year-old woman, identified as Hajiya Amina Adamu, is killed during the invasion. The source says no resident is abducted, but the sudden attack throws the community into panic and fear.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the attackers arrive late at night, move from house to house, and flee before help can arrive. Residents describe the incident as terrifying, especially because it occurs just hours after the governor’s visit, which raises fresh concerns about security response in the area.

“They came with many motorcycles and took food items and other valuables. Only one elderly woman was killed, and no one was kidnapped,” the source says.

The attack comes shortly after the Niger State Government issues a two-month ultimatum to residents of several hamlets around Kainji Lake to vacate the area for planned resettlement. The government says the directive is part of renewed efforts to flush out bandits and other criminal elements operating within the axis.

Governor Umaru Bago announces the ultimatum during a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad Haliru Kitoro, at his palace in New Bussa. The visit follows a recent deadly attack in the emirate that leaves several residents dead and properties destroyed.

During the visit, the governor reassures traditional rulers and community leaders of the government’s commitment to restoring peace and strengthening security operations in Borgu and surrounding areas. He says the relocation plan is designed to deny criminals access to hideouts around the lake.

However, the latest attack raises questions about the effectiveness of current security measures and the speed of implementation of government plans. Residents say the continued attacks have disrupted farming, fishing, and daily activities, worsening economic hardship in the area.

Many locals now call for increased security presence, improved intelligence gathering, and faster action to protect vulnerable communities, especially those in remote villages.

Efforts to get an official response from the Niger State Police Command continue. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, says he will provide details after receiving a full briefing on the incident.

Security analysts warn that without sustained operations and community engagement, bandit attacks may continue despite government assurances. They urge coordinated action between security agencies, traditional institutions, and local residents to prevent further loss of lives.

The attack on Kabe village once again highlights the persistent security challenges facing rural communities in Niger State, even as authorities intensify efforts to curb banditry and restore public confidence.
