The Benue State House of Assembly has elected Mr. Alfred Berger, representing Makurdi North, as the new Speaker following the resignation of Mr. Aondona Dajoh. The election took place during an emergency plenary session where lawmakers set aside existing rules to allow the change in leadership, Mediaplusng.com reports.
The session was presided over by Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Lami Ogenyi, who announced the suspension of parliamentary procedures to enable the assembly to move forward with the election. Notably, Berger had just returned from suspension alongside three other lawmakers last week.
Backed by Governor Hyacinth Alia, the newly elected Speaker, Alfred Berger, pledged to work closely with his predecessor, Aondona Dajoh, and other lawmakers in pursuit of the state’s development agenda. According to Mediaplusng.com, Berger assured that the assembly would prioritize policies that align with the people’s needs.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the former Speaker, Aondona Dajoh, resigned under pressure from the Alia-led administration due to unresolved political differences. A press conference has been scheduled at the Government House, where lawmakers and Governor Hyacinth Alia are currently holding a closed-door meeting at the Jonah Jang Lodge.
