A deadly cholera outbreak has claimed 13 lives and left over 236 people hospitalized in Niger State, triggering an urgent health emergency across six local government areas (LGAs).

The outbreak, which began on Sunday in Shiroro LGA, has rapidly spread to Bosso, Minna, Magama, Bida, and Munya, raising concerns over the escalating number of infections. Health officials have identified Shiroro, Bosso, and Minna as the worst-affected areas.

Confirming the development, Niger State Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Dangana, announced that a comprehensive multi-sectoral response has been activated to contain the spread. “We have established treatment and isolation centres in all affected local councils, alongside aggressive public sensitization campaigns targeting religious institutions and community leaders,” Dr. Dangana said.

The sensitization efforts involve collaboration with key groups such as the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Islamic organizations, and traditional emirate councils to ensure widespread public awareness on preventive measures.

As part of containment measures, an emergency isolation facility has been set up at the old wing of the Late Senator Idris Ibrahim Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre, located along Old Airport Road in Minna, the state capital.

Dr. Dangana commended Governor Umaru Bago for his prompt response to the outbreak and expressed gratitude to donor agencies supporting the state’s intervention efforts.

Echoing the Commissioner’s remarks, the Director of Public Health, Dr. Ibrahim Idris, confirmed that Minna, Bosso, and Shiroro remain the epicentres of the outbreak. He assured residents that health teams are working round-the-clock to prevent further fatalities.

The state government has urged citizens to observe strict hygiene practices, ensure safe drinking water, and promptly report any suspected cholera symptoms to health authorities as containment efforts continue.
