The North West geo-political zone in the Nigerian Senate has announced fresh dates—July 18 and 19, 2025—for its public hearing on the ongoing Constitution review exercise.
This comes after the initial schedule for the zone, which was meant to hold in Kano State on July 4 and 5, was suspended out of respect for the late elder statesman, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who passed away in Abu Dhabi on June 28 and was buried in Madina, Saudi Arabia, on June 30.
While other public hearings across Nigeria’s five remaining geo-political zones were conducted as planned, the North West session was postponed to observe the mourning period in Kano.
Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, who doubles as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, made the announcement during plenary on Wednesday. He called on senators from the zone’s 21 senatorial districts to mobilize constituents and ensure active participation at the hearing.
Senator Barau also urged individuals, civil society groups, and stakeholders within the zone to submit memoranda detailing their recommendations on areas they believe should be amended in the Nigerian Constitution.
The Constitution review exercise aims to reflect the views of citizens and strengthen democratic governance in Nigeria.
