The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected an application by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, seeking to stop the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its planned national convention.
Justice Peter Lifu delivers the ruling, refusing Lamido’s request for an interim order to halt the PDP convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Lamido, through his lawyer, Jeph Njikonye, files a motion ex parte asking the court to issue an order restraining both the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting, supervising, or recognizing the convention until his substantive suit is determined.
However, Justice Lifu declines to grant the interim injunction. Instead, he directs the PDP and INEC, listed as the first and second defendants, to appear before the court to explain why Lamido’s request should not be granted. The judge also gives them 72 hours from the date of service to respond before the next hearing, fixed for November 6, 2025.
According to Mediaplusng.com, Lamido argues that once a case is before the court, all parties are legally bound to maintain the status quo to avoid making the court’s eventual decision meaningless. He insists that allowing the PDP to proceed with its convention would breach the party’s constitution and deny him the right to contest for the position of National Chairman, which he claims he is qualified to seek.
Lamido’s legal team further states that the case raises serious legal issues and that the balance of convenience favors granting the interim order to preserve justice. They emphasize that once the act being challenged is completed, the court’s power to provide effective remedy could be lost.
As reported by Mediaplusng.com, Justice Lifu maintains that the court must first hear from all parties before making any ruling on the matter. The judge also assures that due process will be followed to ensure fairness to both sides.
The case now awaits full hearing on November 6, when the PDP and INEC are expected to defend their actions regarding the upcoming national convention.
