Court Sentences Nnamdi Kanu to Life Imprisonment

A Federal High Court delivers a major ruling today as the judge sentences Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment after reviewing all charges brought against him. The court notes that although the defendant has had enough time to reflect on his actions, he still fails to conduct himself properly throughout the trial.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the judge explains that Kanu’s attitude shows no remorse, but the court will not base its sentencing on emotions or personal conduct. Instead, it will focus strictly on the law and the gravity of the offences.

The judge states clearly that the court initially considers the death penalty, especially given the seriousness of Kanu’s alleged actions. However, global human-rights standards and the growing rejection of capital punishment across many nations influence the judge’s final decision. As reported by Mediaplusng.com, the court decides to temper justice with mercy.

Kanu is therefore sentenced to life imprisonment on Counts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6, instead of receiving a death sentence. On Count 3, he receives 20 years imprisonment, while Count 7 carries a 5-year sentence. All sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve them at the same time.

The court further rules that Kanu must be kept in a special facility suitable for his security and medical needs, noting that placing him in Kuje Correctional Centre is not viable. He must also be restricted from accessing any digital device, unless fully monitored by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).

The judge orders that Nnamdi Kanu be held in protective custody in any secure correctional centre approved by the authorities. In addition, all his transmitting equipment will now be handed over to the Federal Government as part of the court’s ruling.
