The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State has declared its full preparedness to conduct the upcoming National Assembly by-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025. This assurance was given by the Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Onugbum Onuoha, during a media briefing in Benin City.
According to Onuoha, all essential materials, including sensitive election materials, have been successfully distributed to the Local Government Areas (LGAs) involved in the Edo Central Senatorial District by-election. He further confirmed that the logistics and sensitive materials for the Ovia Northeast Federal Constituency by-election have also been delivered as planned.
The REC urged members of the press and the general public to actively engage in the electoral process, emphasizing the need for credible participation and vigilance on election day.
These by-elections became necessary following the emergence of the former Edo Central Senator, Monday Okpebholo, as Governor of Edo State, and the elevation of Hon. Dennis Idahosa, former House of Representatives member for Ovia Northeast, to the position of Deputy Governor.
However, not all political parties that initially signaled their intent to contest in the by-elections are participating. Onuoha revealed that some parties failed to complete the nomination process. He specifically noted that the Labour Party did not indicate interest or submit candidates for the by-elections.
INEC reiterated its commitment to a transparent, free, and fair election, assuring voters that the commission is fully prepared to deliver a credible electoral process.
