EU Delegation Visits Nigerian Senate, Strengthens Partnership on Security and Development

A high-level delegation from the European Union (EU) Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has visited the Nigerian Senate as part of efforts to deepen bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation between both parties.

The delegation, led by Mr. David McAllister, visited the National Assembly in Abuja on Monday, October 28, 2025, where they were received by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The EU lawmakers said their mission was to gain a better understanding of developments in West Africa and to reinforce collaboration with Nigeria in key areas such as security, trade, climate action, and governance.

“We are here to deepen our understanding of the situation in West Africa and strengthen our partnership with Nigeria,” McAllister said during the meeting.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the visit forms part of a larger regional tour covering Nigeria and Ghana, where the EU team seeks to engage policymakers and stakeholders on peace and development across the region. Members of the delegation include Ambassador Greta Mylott, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Miss Zelaya Zorko, Miss Mata Tamido, Sebastian Tankman, General Christophe Gomart, and Sebastian Buharo.

Senate President Akpabio described the visit as a step toward strengthening the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and the European Union. He assured that Nigeria remains open to collaboration that will promote stability, inclusive governance, and economic growth.

“Nigeria is committed to deepening its ties with the EU, focusing on areas of mutual interest that can drive progress for both parties,” Akpabio stated.

He also spoke about the need to improve women’s representation in politics, noting that female candidates often face cultural and electoral challenges. “Women vote more for male candidates, which limits the chances of female aspirants. The Senate is working on constitutional reforms to change this trend, with support from the Black Women’s Forum,” Akpabio added.

As reported by Mediaplusng.com, the EU delegation reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s democratic journey and development agenda. McAllister emphasized that the EU remains committed to backing Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, climate change, and poverty.

“The EU is committed to supporting Nigeria’s development efforts and promoting a stable and democratic nation,” McAllister assured.

The delegation is also expected to participate in the International Islamic Conference on Security and Governance in West Africa and the Sahel, scheduled for November 4–6, 2025, at the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja.

Akpabio expressed optimism that the renewed partnership with the EU will yield greater cooperation in tackling regional and global challenges, adding that both sides must continue to work together for shared prosperity and peace.
