The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, declares Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day and announces a restriction of movement ahead of the Saturday, February 21 Area Council Elections in Abuja.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the Minister makes the announcement during a special broadcast aired on national television and radio stations, urging residents of the FCT to participate actively in the democratic process by voting for candidates of their choice.
In the statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the Minister emphasizes that the elections present a crucial opportunity for residents to shape the future of the six Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the movement restriction takes effect from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026. The directive, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, mandates all security agencies to ensure strict compliance to maintain law and order during the electoral process.
Wike calls on eligible voters to approach the polls with a strong sense of civic duty and responsibility. He urges residents to conduct themselves peacefully, respect electoral guidelines, and accept the outcome of the elections in the spirit of democracy.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the Minister also commends President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, describing it as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible, transparent elections.
The work-free day, he explains, is designed to enable residents travel to their respective communities within the FCT to participate fully in the elections. The restriction of movement, meanwhile, aims to enhance security, prevent electoral malpractice, and ensure a smooth voting process across the six Area Councils.
The Minister stresses that democracy remains a work in progress and requires continuous reforms and active citizen participation. He notes that improvements in electoral laws and processes are necessary to deepen democratic governance and promote accountability.
Residents are encouraged to turn out en masse on Saturday to elect Chairmen and Councillors who will contribute meaningfully to development, peace, and prosperity within the FCT. Wike expresses optimism that the elections will produce capable leaders dedicated to grassroots development and effective local governance.
Security agencies across the FCT are placed on high alert to enforce compliance with the movement restriction and safeguard lives, property, and electoral materials during the exercise.
As preparations intensify for the Area Council Elections, authorities reaffirm their commitment to ensuring a peaceful, orderly, and transparent process, while urging all stakeholders to prioritize unity, civic responsibility, and respect for democratic values.
