The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) reacts to the defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, describing his move to the ruling party as a “self-inflicted injury.” The party says the Governor willingly took the path that led to his exit and therefore cannot accuse the PDP or any group of abandoning him.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the PDP argues that Governor Fubara repeatedly received support from the party, civil society groups, and concerned Nigerians throughout the political crisis in Rivers State. The party says his defection shows he has chosen his direction and must now take responsibility for the outcome.
In a further statement reported by Mediaplusng.com, the PDP warns that the Rivers saga highlights the weakening of democratic institutions, where powerful individuals allegedly use federal structures to intimidate political opponents. The party says such practices threaten democratic norms and must be condemned by all Nigerians.
The PDP also raises concerns about what it calls a growing push toward a one-party state. It urges citizens and the international community to defend Nigeria’s political space from any slide toward electoral authoritarianism.
