A late-night fire has destroyed part of the female annex hostel at Gombe State University, leaving students counting their losses. The incident, which reportedly started from a cooking gas explosion, spread quickly through the hostel, burning down students’ belongings including laptops, clothes, and important documents.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya visited the university on Friday morning to assess the level of damage. During the visit, he expressed sympathy to the affected students and announced a relief donation of ₦20 million to help ease their hardship. The governor also promised to build additional hostels within the institution to address the long-standing accommodation challenges faced by students.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the governor described the fire as “unfortunate and painful,” while assuring that the state government will take measures to prevent a similar incident in the future. The management of Gombe State University has begun compiling a list of affected students for support and temporary relocation.
