The House of Representatives has taken a strong stance against arbitrary rent increases across Nigeria, proposing that rent hikes should not exceed 20% of the current amount, regardless of infrastructure upgrades or other factors.
This decision follows a motion raised by Hon. Bassey Akiba, titled “The Need to Regulate Arbitrary Rent Increase and Protect Tenants from Exploitation.” Lawmakers say the move aims to address the growing hardship faced by tenants due to uncontrolled rent adjustments by landlords.
According to a report by Mediaplusng.com, the House also called on the Federal Government to prioritize affordable housing projects and improve access to low-cost housing. Lawmakers believe that such investments will ease pressure on the rental market and make decent accommodation more accessible to ordinary Nigerians.
In a related development, the House passed a resolution urging the Inspector General of Police and the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to ensure that officers at checkpoints wear full uniforms and proper identification tags.
The lawmakers expressed concern that some officers operate in plain clothes at checkpoints, a practice that goes against global standards and makes it difficult for citizens to identify legitimate security personnel.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the House emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in security operations, saying proper identification will help strengthen public trust and ensure the safety of both officers and citizens.
