House of Representatives Reaffirms Support for Speaker Abbas, Focused on National Development

The House of Representatives has dismissed reports of a looming crisis within its ranks, stressing that lawmakers remain united under the leadership of Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON.

In a statement released on Sunday, the House clarified that comments lifted from WhatsApp group chats do not reflect official positions of any caucus or the chamber. It described such informal exchanges as normal in a democracy but not representative of parliamentary resolutions.

The House noted that with 360 lawmakers drawn from different political, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, unity has been sustained through consensus building and inclusive debate. According to the statement, this approach has allowed the 10th Assembly to remain focused on key national priorities ahead of resumption on September 23, 2025.

On constituency projects, the House explained that delays in contractor payments are a nationwide issue, not peculiar to lawmakers’ projects. It said the Appropriations Committees have been in discussions with the Finance Ministry, and payments have already begun, with a pledge to clear all outstanding 2024 obligations.

The leadership also restated the importance of constituency projects under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing them as a way to extend government presence across the country.

Responding to concerns about recruitment into the National Assembly bureaucracy, the House said the exercise was conducted by the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC), an independent body. However, Speaker Abbas has directed the House Committee on Public Service Matters to investigate the process to ensure fairness and transparency.

The statement dismissed claims of regional bias in development, insisting that the House operates on equity, justice, and fairness. It urged Nigerians to disregard divisive narratives and trust established parliamentary processes to resolve internal matters.

The leadership further assured citizens that lawmakers remain committed to their constitutional mandate of lawmaking, oversight, and representation, with transparency and inclusiveness as guiding principles.
