The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, is clarifying the legal status of the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, amid reports surrounding ongoing court proceedings in Abuja.

The anti-corruption agency says its latest statement aims to correct what it describes as inaccurate media reports suggesting that it seeks a fresh extension of El-Rufai’s detention.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the Commission states that its appearance in court on March 17, 2026, is not for the purpose of requesting an extension of the remand order, but rather to respond to an application filed by the former governor.

The ICPC explains that the court session is focused on hearing an application filed by El-Rufai on March 6, 2026, in which he challenges the validity of an earlier court order that renews his detention.

During the proceedings, legal counsel representing the Commission serves its response to El-Rufai’s application on his legal team.

According to Mediaplusng.com, counsel to the former governor subsequently requests an adjournment to allow adequate time to review and respond to the Commission’s submission.

The presiding Magistrate grants the request and adjourns the matter to March 31, 2026, to enable both parties to fully address the issues raised in the application.

The ICPC emphasizes that the court proceedings follow due legal process and are consistent with the rights of the parties involved.

To provide clarity, the Commission outlines the timeline of events leading to the current detention status.

It explains that an initial remand order is granted by the court, authorizing the detention of the former governor for a period of 14 days to facilitate investigation into allegations involving financial misconduct and abuse of office.

Upon the expiration of the initial remand period, the Commission applies for an extension to complete its investigation.

The court grants the request on March 5, 2026, approving an additional 14-day extension.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the Commission notes that the extension is obtained through due legal channels and in compliance with applicable laws.

The ICPC further states that an earlier attempt by El-Rufai’s legal team to set aside a remand order issued on February 19, 2026, is dismissed by the court on March 9, 2026.

As a result, the Commission confirms that the former governor remains in lawful custody under the subsisting remand order issued on March 5, 2026.

Officials say the detention is being carried out strictly within the framework of the law and under judicial authorization.

The Commission reiterates that it is adhering to all requirements set out by the court, including the submission of progress reports as mandated.

Legal experts say such procedures are standard in cases involving ongoing investigations, particularly when additional time is required to gather evidence.

They also note that the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, provides legal guidelines for detention and investigation processes in Nigeria.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the ICPC emphasizes its commitment to professionalism and respect for the rule of law in handling the matter.

The agency maintains that all its actions are guided by legal provisions and judicial oversight.

The Commission also addresses concerns about public discourse surrounding the case.

It reiterates its policy of avoiding media trials, stressing that legal matters should be resolved within the courtroom rather than in the public domain.

Observers say high-profile cases often attract public attention and media coverage, which can sometimes lead to misinformation or misinterpretation of legal proceedings.

The ICPC therefore urges members of the public to rely on verified and official information when following developments related to the case.

The agency cautions against the spread of unverified reports that could mislead the public or distort the facts.

In addition, the Commission assures Nigerians that it remains focused on carrying out its mandate without bias or external influence.

It emphasizes that the investigation is being conducted thoroughly and in line with established legal procedures.

Anti-corruption advocates say transparency and adherence to due process are essential in maintaining public trust in institutions responsible for accountability.

They add that clear communication from agencies like the ICPC helps to reduce speculation and ensure public understanding of complex legal processes.

As the case continues, attention remains on the next court date scheduled for March 31, 2026, when the application challenging the remand order is expected to be heard further.

For now, the ICPC maintains that the detention of Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai remains lawful and backed by a valid court order.

The Commission reiterates its commitment to justice, accountability, and the rule of law as it continues its investigation.
