ICPC, NSUBEB Train Niger Education Officers on Integrity and Anti-Corruption in Schools

In a bold step to strengthen transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s education system, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), in partnership with the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), has organized a strategic training workshop for education secretaries across the 25 local government areas in Niger State.

The capacity-building session focused on promoting integrity, transparency, accountability, and teamwork among education managers—especially in handling public resources and delivering quality basic education.

Speaking at the workshop, NSUBEB Executive Chairman Muhammad Ibrahim emphasized the importance of managing public funds with honesty, stressing that every kobo allocated to education must be accounted for.

> “We are dealing with public funds, and citizens have the right to know how we utilize these resources. The people we are training today will lead tomorrow. Every action must reflect integrity,” he stated.

He urged participants to see the link between their daily tasks and the lives of schoolchildren, adding that even the smallest administrative duties could significantly impact a child’s future.

Also present was Clement Obaniyi, Acting Provost of the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria and Head of Training and Research at ICPC. He underscored the importance of education in nation-building.

> “If we get education right, we’ll get Nigeria right. That’s why this training focuses on instilling ethical values among frontline education officers,” he explained.

Obaniyi also praised Governor Umaru Bago and NSUBEB for supporting initiatives aimed at curbing corruption in the education sector.

Education Secretary of Chanchaga LGA, Usman Ibrahim, emphasized that the fight against corruption must begin at the grassroots level.

> “We are the first point of contact with pupils. It’s our duty to instil anti-corruption values early,” he said.

Mrs. Grace Haruna, a participant from Tafa LGA, described the training as enlightening and timely.

> “This has reminded me that integrity starts with how we carry out our responsibilities daily. I’m committed to educating my team and students on the dangers of corruption,” she added.

The workshop marks a significant step in reforming Niger State’s education sector and advancing national efforts to build a more accountable public service from the ground up.
