The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Tuesday, July 30, 2025, received a high-level delegation from the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The meeting, held at the IGP Smart Conference Hall, focused on strengthening collaboration towards credible electoral processes in Nigeria.
Leading the ECONEC delegation was Mrs. Davidetta Browne Lansanah, Chairperson of Liberia’s National Elections Commission. She was accompanied by top electoral officials including Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission; Mr. Chinedu Chinedu, Senior Programme Officer at ECONEC; and Prof. Bolade Eyinla, Chief Technical Adviser to Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), among other stakeholders.
Mrs. Lansanah expressed gratitude to the IGP for granting the audience, acknowledging the pivotal role of the Nigeria Police in safeguarding electoral integrity. She noted that the visit was a follow-up dialogue on the findings and recommendations of the 2023 general elections report, aimed at developing strategies ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
In his response, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to neutrality, fairness, and professionalism in election security. He outlined the Force’s responsibilities across three key phases: pre-election conflict management and campaign monitoring, election day security operations, and post-election law enforcement to prevent violence and ensure prosecution of electoral offenders.
The IGP reaffirmed that under his leadership, the Police remain dedicated to upholding democratic values, ensuring elections are free, fair, and credible. He stressed the importance of continued collaboration between electoral bodies and security agencies, while appreciating the positive assessments received from international observers regarding Police conduct during recent elections.
Dr. Egbetokun assured that the Nigeria Police Force would sustain its efforts to maintain electoral integrity, pledging full support towards successful future elections in Nigeria.
