The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) strongly rejects the impeachment proceedings initiated against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara by the Rivers State House of Assembly. The group describes the move as undemocratic and contrary to the will of the people of Rivers State.
Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the IYC President, Alaye Theophilus, says the impeachment process lacks moral and popular support and risks deepening political tension in the state, Mediaplusng.com reports. He insists that Governor Fubara enjoys the backing of Rivers people and should be allowed to continue his mandate without intimidation.
The IYC leader warns that the impeachment attempt could destabilise governance and undermine democratic institutions in the state. He urges lawmakers to prioritise peace, dialogue, and development over political confrontation, stressing that Rivers State cannot afford prolonged instability.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the group also calls on President Bola Tinubu to intervene by removing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The IYC alleges that the minister plays a role in escalating political tension and unrest in Rivers State.
The council argues that federal neutrality is critical in resolving the ongoing political crisis. It says any perception of external influence or interference could further divide the state and weaken public trust in government.
The IYC reiterates its commitment to peace and democratic principles, calling on all political actors to respect the rule of law and the mandate freely given to Governor Fubara. The group urges stakeholders to focus on governance, security, and economic development rather than actions that could inflame public anger.
As tensions continue, the council appeals to Rivers youths to remain calm and law-abiding while advocating for justice and fairness through peaceful means. It maintains that dialogue, not impeachment threats, remains the best path to lasting political stability in the state.
