The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirms that the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Labour Party (LP) do not appear on the ballot for the forthcoming Rivers State House of Assembly bye-elections. The electoral body reiterates its commitment to delivering a free, fair, and credible electoral process in the affected constituencies.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the bye-elections are scheduled to hold on February 21 in Khana State Constituency II and Ahoada East State Constituency II. The exercise aims to fill vacant seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly, with preparations intensifying across the state ahead of the polls.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Rivers State, Professor Gabriel Yomere, explains that the absence of the three political parties follows procedural and legal issues. He states that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) does not conduct a valid primary election for the constituencies, thereby failing to meet nomination requirements. He further notes that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) does not upload its candidate’s details to the INEC nomination portal within the stipulated timeframe.

As reported by Mediaplusng.com, Professor Yomere also clarifies that the Labour Party (LP) remains entangled in ongoing litigation, which affects its eligibility to participate in the bye-elections. He emphasizes that INEC strictly adheres to the Electoral Act, guidelines, and timelines governing candidate nomination and party participation.

The REC assures voters, political stakeholders, and observers that INEC remains impartial and fully prepared to conduct credible bye-elections in both constituencies. He highlights that the Commission has finalized logistical arrangements, including the deployment of electoral materials, trained ad-hoc staff, and coordination with security agencies to safeguard the voting process.

In its continued coverage, Mediaplusng.com reports that INEC identifies potential flashpoints within the constituencies and briefs relevant security agencies accordingly. Professor Yomere confirms that adequate security deployment is in place to prevent disruptions, voter intimidation, or electoral malpractice. He stresses that maintaining peace and order remains a top priority to ensure voter confidence and participation.

The Commission reiterates that political parties must comply fully with nomination procedures, including conducting valid primaries and submitting candidate details within approved deadlines. Professor Yomere explains that transparency in the nomination process strengthens electoral integrity and protects the credibility of the ballot.

INEC also calls on eligible voters in Khana State Constituency II and Ahoada East State Constituency II to come out peacefully and exercise their civic rights. The Commission encourages stakeholders, including civil society organisations and election observers, to monitor the process and support efforts toward democratic accountability.

With preparations nearing completion, INEC maintains that the Rivers State bye-elections will reflect the Commission’s commitment to electoral transparency, rule of law, and democratic governance. The electoral body assures the public that all procedures align with constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act, reinforcing trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

As election day approaches, attention remains focused on voter turnout, security coordination, and adherence to due process—key elements that shape public confidence in the credibility of the Rivers State bye-elections.
