INEC Extends Deadline For Party Registers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Nigeria’s electoral body is adjusting its timetable for the 2027 general election, extending the deadline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members following concerns raised by stakeholders.

The decision follows a consultative meeting between the electoral commission and political parties, where issues surrounding the earlier timeline are discussed in relation to compliance with electoral laws and internal party processes.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the adjustment is aimed at ensuring that political parties have adequate time to meet legal requirements while maintaining alignment with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

Originally, political parties are expected to submit their registers of members within a fixed period in April 2026, but concerns over feasibility and timing prompt a review of the schedule.

The National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education explains that the commission carefully considers submissions from political parties before agreeing to revise the timeline.

According to Mediaplusng.com, the updated arrangement allows political parties to determine suitable dates for their primaries within an approved window, providing greater flexibility for internal planning and organization.

Political parties are now permitted to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, a period considered sufficient for transparent and inclusive candidate selection processes.

The commission emphasizes that all political parties must adhere strictly to the revised schedule to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The adjustment aligns with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026, which requires that party membership registers be submitted not later than 21 days before the conduct of primaries.

As a result, the final deadline for submission of party registers is now extended to May 10, 2026, replacing the earlier date set in April.

Political parties are expected to ensure accuracy, transparency, and completeness in their membership registers as part of preparations for credible primaries.

The electoral body continues to monitor compliance and provide guidance to political parties to avoid disputes and irregularities that could affect the election process.

Election analysts note that early planning and adherence to timelines are essential to reducing legal challenges and strengthening public confidence in the electoral system.

Preparations for the 2027 general elections are already gaining momentum, with political parties beginning internal consultations and mobilization efforts across the country.

The commission reiterates its commitment to working closely with political parties and other stakeholders to ensure that all processes leading to the elections meet constitutional and legal standards.

By revising the timetable, the electoral body demonstrates its willingness to address stakeholder concerns while maintaining the integrity of the electoral framework.

Ensuring that party primaries are conducted within clear and lawful timelines is considered a critical step toward delivering free, fair, and credible elections.

Political parties, civil society organizations, and the electorate are encouraged to support the process through compliance, transparency, and active participation.

With the revised timetable now in place, attention shifts to implementation, as stakeholders prepare for the next phases of the electoral cycle.
