The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives candidate and his campaign director-general in Kaduna State for alleged vote buying and money laundering during a bye-election.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the anti-graft agency brought the two men before the Federal High Court, accusing them of using illicit funds to influence voters during the poll. The EFCC said the offence undermines Nigeria’s electoral process and goes against the fight against corruption.
The case has drawn public attention in Kaduna, where political watchers are keenly following the court proceedings. Mediaplusng.com reports that the EFCC has vowed to pursue the case to its logical conclusion, stressing that vote buying remains a major threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. The presiding judge ordered them to be remanded in custody until their bail applications are determined. The matter was adjourned to a later date for further hearing.
