The Katsina State Government has unveiled a renewed, multi-sector plan to fight the growing malnutrition crisis affecting children and mothers, declaring it a public health emergency.
The announcement follows a recent Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) report revealing that 652 children died from malnutrition in Katsina within the first half of 2025.
Speaking at a press briefing in Katsina, the Executive Secretary of the State Primary Health Care Agency, Dr. Shamsuddeen Yahya, described malnutrition as one of the state’s leading causes of sickness and death. He called the MSF report a “wake-up call” and pledged stronger collaboration with development partners, community leaders, and civil society to save lives.
Dr. Yahya also warned against the illegal sale of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) meant for malnourished children, announcing that mobile courts will soon be set up to prosecute offenders.
