The Kebbi State Government has provided ₦10 million as emergency relief to traders affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Wood and Timber Market in Birnin Kebbi.
Deputy Governor Alhaji Umar Abubakar Tafida led a government delegation to inspect the affected area and announced the financial support during his visit. The fire incident, suspected to have been caused by an electrical surge following a power outage, destroyed nine shops used mainly for storing timber products.
Officials from the Kebbi State Ministry of Lands estimated the total loss at over ₦190 million.
Speaking to reporters, Deputy Governor Tafida said the donation serves as an initial intervention to support the traders. “This is first aid from the government before a more comprehensive package is considered. Please take it in good faith,” he urged.
He also conveyed Governor Dr. Nasir Idris’s condolences, as the governor is currently on pilgrimage. The Deputy Governor advised traders to implement better safety measures to prevent similar disasters in the future.
The Kebbi State Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting citizens during emergencies and pledged to explore long-term solutions for fire prevention in local markets.
