The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called on the Federal Government to adopt a “Fly Nigeria Air Act” that will make it mandatory for government officials traveling abroad to use Nigerian airlines on available routes.
Keyamo made this call during the inaugural flight of Air Peace from Abuja to Heathrow, London, a milestone moment for Nigeria’s aviation sector. Speaking at the event, he said the move will strengthen the nation’s aviation industry and help local carriers grow their international presence. According to him, it is only fair for public officials to support homegrown airlines that are helping to project Nigeria’s image globally.
The minister explained that the initiative mirrors global best practices, where many countries encourage or mandate the use of their national or local carriers for official travel. “Countries across the world prioritize their local airlines first before others,” he noted. “There is no reason why Nigeria should be left out.”
According to Mediaplusng.com, Keyamo emphasized that supporting indigenous airlines like Air Peace will help create jobs, reduce capital flight, and promote national pride. He added that Air Peace’s successful entry into the London route is proof that Nigerian airlines can compete favorably on international standards.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the proposed policy, if adopted, will not only boost the visibility of Nigerian airlines but also enhance economic benefits for the country’s aviation sector. Keyamo said his ministry is committed to developing policies that protect local investments while ensuring fair competition in the skies
