The Labour Party has responded to recent public appearances and comments by Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the party’s 2023 Vice-Presidential candidate, regarding the ongoing leadership issue within the party.
Dr. Baba-Ahmed was seen attending a meeting reportedly convened by suspended former National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure. He also appeared on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme aired on July 23, 2025, where he referred to Abure as the party’s chairman.
In a statement issued by the party, the Labour Party emphasized that Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s remarks reflect his personal opinion and do not override the Supreme Court’s ruling on the matter.
The apex court, in a judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, clearly ruled against Barrister Abure’s claim to the National Chairmanship, stating:
> “The decisions of both trial court and the court below recognizing Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman… are hereby set aside… Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1271/2024 is hereby struck out for want of jurisdiction.”
The court further concluded:
> “This appeal is meritorious and is hereby allowed. Appeal allowed.”
Based on this ruling, the Labour Party confirms that Senator Nenadi Usman remains the legally recognized Interim National Chairman. The party reiterates that Supreme Court judgments are binding and not subject to individual interpretation or preference.
While acknowledging Dr. Baba-Ahmed’s desire for unity and reconciliation within the party, the Labour Party stressed that such efforts must be grounded in truth and respect for the rule of law.
As preparations continue for the party’s ward, local government, and state congresses leading up to the national convention, the leadership under Senator Nenadi Usman calls on all members to remain calm, focused, and united.
The party believes that only through internal harmony can it effectively challenge the APC-led government and present a credible alternative for Nigerians.
