The Labour Party Senate Caucus has strongly condemned a reported threat made by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, against the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi.

In a statement released on Sunday, the senators expressed concern over the governor’s alleged remarks warning that Mr. Obi’s security would not be guaranteed should he visit Edo State again without prior clearance from the state government. The caucus described the statement as “disturbing, unconstitutional, and a direct threat to democracy.”

Mr. Peter Obi had recently visited Edo State, where he donated ₦15 million to a nursing school—a gesture that, according to the senators, should not have attracted hostility or political intimidation.

Citing Section 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the lawmakers reminded Governor Okpebholo that every Nigerian, including Peter Obi, has the constitutional right to freedom of movement and association. “Such rights are not subject to any governor’s discretion,” the statement emphasized.

The caucus called on Governor Okpebholo to immediately retract his comments and issue a public apology to Mr. Obi and the Nigerian people for what they described as “executive lawlessness.”

They further urged the Inspector General of Police and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to take the alleged threat seriously and ensure the safety and freedom of all Nigerian citizens, regardless of political affiliation.

“The Nigeria of today must reject executive impunity and uphold democratic values. No public office holder should abuse power to intimidate citizens,” the statement concluded.
