Lagos Police Debunk Reports of Violence During Oworonshoki Demolition

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging that officers attacked residents during the recent demolition exercise in Oworonshoki, Lagos. The Command described the reports as false, misleading, and mischievously crafted to misinform the public about the role of police officers deployed to maintain law and order during the government-led operation.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abimbola Adebisi, the police officers on duty were only there to ensure peace and protect the lives and property of residents, as well as government officials involved in the urban renewal exercise. Adebisi emphasized that at no point did police personnel engage in violence or harassment of citizens, as alleged in viral online videos and posts.

> “The constitutional duty of the Police is to protect life and property, including those of public officials lawfully carrying out government duties,” the statement reads.

The Command explained that the demolition exercise in Oworonshoki was led by the Lagos State Department of Urban Development and Planning, in collaboration with the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences. The process, according to officials, followed due legal procedures — including several months of prior notices to affected occupants and payment of compensation to eligible property owners.

The police reiterated that their presence at the site was solely to prevent a breakdown of law and order. The statement stressed that officers acted under strict instructions to remain professional, civil, and respectful of human rights throughout the operation.

The Lagos State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, supporting lawful government activities, and maintaining peace and order in the state.

> “Every allegation of police violence during the demolition is unfounded and baseless. We urge members of the public to verify information before sharing and to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies for peace and progress in Lagos State,” the statement added.
