The Lagos State Police Command has stopped plans for an unapproved Egungun festival in Oregun and arrested 12 suspects linked to handbills and online posts restricting public freedom of movement and expression. The publications, attributed to the “Oje Parapo of Oregun,” attempted to impose unlawful restrictions on residents.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, directs that the planned festival—scheduled for November 27 and 28—must not hold. He says the event has already created fear and tension among residents and poses a threat to public peace and safety.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, the Command warns that no individual or group is permitted to take the law into their hands or engage in unauthorized gatherings that violate the rights of Lagosians. Mediaplusng.com notes that similar actions were taken in Mafoluku, Oshodi, where 12 suspects were arrested on November 23 for circulating materials capable of disrupting public order.
The Lagos Police assure residents that their fundamental rights will be protected and advise the public to go about their lawful activities without fear. The Command also urges citizens to report suspicious activities through the provided emergency numbers.
