Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede: A Soldier’s Journey to the Pinnacle of the Nigerian Army

Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede, the 29th Chief of Army Staff, is a man whose story reflects dedication, discipline, and distinguished service. Born on June 21, 1968, in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Oluyede’s early education at Holy Trinity Primary School and Christ’s School, Ado-Ekiti, laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to excellence. He joined the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1987 as part of the 39 Regular Course and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1992.

Over the years, General Oluyede has risen through the ranks to become a symbol of professionalism in the Nigerian Army. His appointment as Chief of Army Staff in November 2024, after briefly serving in an acting capacity, marks the culmination of a remarkable military journey. His leadership philosophy focuses on transforming the Nigerian Army into a well-motivated and combat-ready force, committed to national security and unity.

Throughout his career, Mediaplusng.com reports that General Oluyede has attended several prestigious courses both in Nigeria and abroad, including the Young Officers’ Course, Commanding Officers’ Course, and the United Nations Military Observers’ Course. He is also an alumnus of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) and holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Economics from the Nigerian Defence Academy. These experiences have shaped his approach to leadership, strategic planning, and operational efficiency.

General Oluyede’s service record is impressive. He has held key command and instructional positions, including Commander, Sector 2 Operation LAFIYA DOLE, General Officer Commanding 6 Division, and Commandant, Amphibious Training School (ATS). His leadership at ATS was particularly transformative—he initiated the construction of new facilities, refurbished old structures, and established skill acquisition centers for soldiers’ families, all from limited resources.

He has also played a crucial role in counter-terrorism and peacekeeping operations within and outside Nigeria, demonstrating courage and resilience in challenging missions. His time in the Niger Delta and North East theatres of operation saw significant successes in stabilizing communities and restoring peace. Colleagues describe him as a strategic thinker and a motivator who leads by example and places the welfare of his troops at the forefront of his command.

As Chief of Army Staff, General Oluyede prioritizes troop welfare, training, and modernization. Under his leadership, the Army has refurbished and acquired new equipment such as mine-resistant vehicles, armoured fighting vehicles, and night-vision systems to enhance field operations. He also approved the establishment of a second recruitment depot in Osogbo to strengthen manpower and ensure adequate training of new soldiers.

For his exemplary service, General Oluyede has received numerous medals, including the Distinguished Service Star (DSS), Grand Service Star (GSS), Field Command Medal (FCM), and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award (CCA). His leadership continues to inspire both serving and aspiring officers within the Nigerian military.

Beyond his military duties, General Oluyede enjoys sports such as basketball and volleyball, and values family life. He is married and blessed with children.

Through his commitment, humility, and reform-driven leadership, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede exemplifies the renewed spirit of the Nigerian Army—dedicated to protecting the nation and empowering its men and women in uniform.
