Makinde Mourns Late Olubadan, Pledges Government Support and Befitting Burial

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed his condolences following the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin I.

The governor received an official delegation from the late monarch’s family at his office in Ibadan. The delegation included the former President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Chief Bayo Oyero; the monarch’s younger brother, Mr. Osuolale Owolabi Olakulehin; and his son, Aremo Olasumbo Owolabi.

In his address, Governor Makinde described the loss as painful, emphasizing that while no one wants to lose loved ones, the human body is not designed to last forever.

> “We always want them to stay longer, but God has designed our time on earth. I commiserate with the family and all of us in Ibadanland. The state government will stand with the family and play its part, including organizing a befitting burial for our royal father,” Makinde said.

He urged the family to take heart, noting that the day also marked the 13th anniversary of his own father’s passing. “I pray that God grants the family strength to bear this loss,” he added.

Earlier, Chief Oyero, who led the family’s delegation, thanked the governor and the state government for the support shown during Oba Olakulehin’s reign.

> “We are grateful to God and to Your Excellency for your role in his ascension. Despite the controversy before his installation, your administration stood firm and ensured his coronation was historic and dignified,” he stated.

Oba Frederick Owolabi Olakulehin, who turned 90 on July 5, ascended the throne a year ago as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland. His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in the city’s traditional leadership.
