The number of deaths from the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has climbed to 160, according to the latest update from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).
The Acting Director General of NSEMA, Ibrahim Hussaini, confirmed that five additional bodies were recovered between June 2 and June 3, after joint search efforts with community leaders and emergency response teams. The process included checks at nearby burial sites, led by the Sarkin Hausawa of Mokwa and supported by rescue officials.
In a follow-up operation, two more bodies — believed to be children — were found trapped under fallen trees along the Mokwa-Raba route. Local volunteers assisted in the search, helping emergency teams with difficult recoveries.
The updated death toll has been verified by NSEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Red Cross, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Rescue and recovery efforts are still ongoing, with authorities working to locate missing persons and offer relief support to affected families.
The Mokwa flood has become one of Nigeria’s deadliest natural disasters in recent years, raising urgent concerns about climate resilience, early warning systems, and community preparedness in flood-prone areas.
