The National Assembly Joint Committee on Customs and Tariffs has approved the immediate implementation of the 4% Free-On-Board (FOB) charge as provided by law.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Isah Jibrin, made the call during an oversight session with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, on Monday. He questioned the delay in enforcing the law and insisted that there should be no further debate on a matter already passed into law.
“Do we subject something that has been passed into law to further debate or defense? The 4% must be implemented immediately because it is law,” Senator Jibrin said.
His position was unanimously supported by committee members through a voice vote.
The National Assembly also urged the Finance Minister to fast-track the release of ₦50 billion earmarked for Nigeria Customs modernization projects. The fund, which is currently awaiting Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval, is expected to support digital transformation and infrastructure upgrades within the service.
Lawmakers stressed that the fund’s quick release is essential for enhancing Customs efficiency and boosting national revenue.
