NCAA Warns Airlines Over Non-Compliance With Currency Declaration Rules

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a strong reminder to all international airlines flying into the country to fully comply with the currency declaration directive for inbound passengers

This move is part of Nigeria’s ongoing effort to strengthen its Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) measures, aligning with international financial standards.

In a statement, the NCAA emphasized that international airlines must:

1. Announce during flights or before landing that passengers are legally required to declare any currency or Bearer Negotiable Instruments (BNIs) above $10,000 USD or its equivalent upon entry into Nigeria.

2. Distribute currency declaration forms onboard to passengers before landing, allowing for easy compliance with the directive.

The Authority noted with concern that some airlines have failed to implement these measures despite prior communication.

> “We expect full cooperation from all international airlines. This is crucial for Nigeria’s global financial credibility and the fight against illicit financial flows,” the NCAA stated.

The aviation regulator has made it clear that non-compliance will attract sanctions. Monitoring will be intensified to ensure that every airline aligns with the currency declaration policy.

The NCAA urges all stakeholders to support Nigeria’s commitment to secure, transparent, and responsible air travel.
