Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Rivers State have repelled an attack by suspected cultists during a drug raid at Odunze Lane, Mile 3 Diobu, Port Harcourt. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, caused panic in the busy area as gunshots rang out, forcing residents and commuters to flee for safety.
According to eyewitnesses, the hoodlums attempted to overpower the anti-narcotics officers and rescue a suspected drug dealer already in handcuffs. Two of the attackers reportedly sustained gunshot wounds and were carried away by their accomplices. The NDLEA team, however, successfully completed the operation despite the violent resistance.
Confirming the incident, the NDLEA Rivers State Command said its operatives acted on credible intelligence around 4:30 p.m. on October 28, 2025, leading to the arrest of three suspects, including one identified as Okpe, found with 12 kilograms of cannabis sativa. The agency explained that a group of hoodlums later stormed the scene, pelting officers with stones and bottles in an attempt to stop the arrest.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the operatives fired warning shots to disperse the mob and safely transported both the suspects and the seized exhibits.
In a statement signed by NDLEA Public Affairs Officer, CSN Ugo Olisaemeka-Iyi, the agency praised its operatives for their professionalism and courage. The State Commander, CN Ahmed Mamuda, vowed that the NDLEA will not bow to intimidation from criminal groups, stressing that its mission to eliminate drug abuse and trafficking in Rivers State remains firm.
He also called on residents to support the agency through credible information and community vigilance, reports Mediaplusng.com.
This is not the first time NDLEA officials have faced such resistance in the area. Similar attacks were recorded in April 2023 and again two weeks ago, when officers were ambushed by suspected cultists during a separate operation.
The NDLEA says investigations are ongoing, and the arrested suspects are providing useful details expected to lead to more arrests.
