Niger Emergency Agency Reaffirms Commitment to Disaster Response Across the State

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has restated its dedication to protecting lives and property through timely and coordinated disaster responses across Niger State.

In a statement from the Director General, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the agency expressed sympathy to families affected by recent disasters and highlighted major interventions carried out in various communities.

Key Disaster Interventions by NSEMA

One of the most tragic incidents occurred on September 24, 2024, when a tanker explosion in Agaie killed 60 people and injured eight others. NSEMA led rescue operations and worked with emergency responders and local authorities to assess damages and offer support to victims.

Another deadly explosion happened on January 18, 2025, in Diko community, resulting in over 80 fatalities. NSEMA quickly deployed emergency teams, partnered with health officials and security agencies, and assisted affected families with recovery efforts.

In Sabon Pegi, a dynamite blast caused severe damage to homes and led to loss of lives. NSEMA conducted damage assessments and distributed relief materials, including cash support from the state government.

Flood and Fire Disaster Responses

Ahead of the rainy season, NSEMA launched its 2025 Flood Sensitization Campaign across all eight emirate councils in Niger State. The campaign educated communities on flood preparedness, distributed awareness materials, and encouraged safety measures in high-risk areas.

The agency also responded to several fire outbreaks in both homes and commercial spaces. Affected individuals received emergency relief, while long-term needs were also evaluated to support recovery.

Recent Emergency Efforts in Mokwa and Other Areas

Following the recent flood disaster in Mokwa, which displaced thousands, NSEMA provided emergency shelters and relief items. The agency worked with local leaders and humanitarian groups to reach impacted families.

Flood assessments were also carried out in Kpautagi, Jaagi, Bida, and Katcha, while armed attacks in Mariga and Rijau raised new humanitarian concerns. NSEMA is monitoring the situation and preparing for emergency support.

Preparing for Future Disasters

To improve response time during emergencies, NSEMA is stockpiling relief items at strategic locations across Niger State.

The agency thanked Governor Umaru Bago, traditional rulers, community leaders, and humanitarian partners for their support in strengthening the state’s disaster response capacity.

NSEMA urged residents to remain alert, follow safety guidelines, and report emergencies promptly. The agency remains focused on reducing disaster risks and building resilience in all communities across Niger State.
