The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled an automated overtime cargo clearance system to tackle congestion at the Onne Ports and improve trade facilitation. The system is designed to fast-track cargo evacuation, reduce dwelling time at terminals, and minimize corrupt practices that have slowed clearance processes in the past.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the initiative marks a major shift from manual operations to a more transparent, technology-driven process. Speaking at the launch, Comptroller Hadiel Hadison, who represented the Comptroller-General of Customs, explained that the new platform will strengthen efficiency, boost revenue, and create a smoother trade environment for importers and exporters.
Some port users, however, noted that there are still other areas requiring attention. Stakeholders including Obiora Elochukwu and Ahmed Zaka, Vice Chairman of the Onne Chapter, called for broader reforms that will further ease clearing procedures, enhance transparency, and cut unnecessary bottlenecks in cargo movement.
Mediaplusng.com reports that the Customs Service has assured operators that the new clearance system will not only improve cargo management but also align Nigeria’s ports with international best practices. The move is expected to restore confidence among investors and traders while supporting government efforts to enhance ease of doing business.
