Nigeria Maintains 5-Year Visas for U.S. Citizens: Presidency Debunks Misinformation

The Nigerian government has debunked claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu halted the issuance of five-year multiple-entry non-immigrant visas to U.S. citizens. The Presidency confirmed that the policy remains intact, in line with existing bilateral agreements and the principle of diplomatic reciprocity.

Since assuming office, President Tinubu has reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to honoring international agreements. A directive was issued mandating all relevant agencies to implement bilateral treaties with partner nations, including the United States.

In response to recent adjustments in the U.S. visa policy affecting Nigerians, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that Nigeria continues to grant five-year multiple-entry visas to American citizens. The Ministry emphasized that the United States’ claim of reciprocity as the reason for its current policy does not align with the facts.

Clarifying the E-Visa Policy

The government also explained that the newly introduced 90-day single-entry e-visa applies only to tourists and short-term business travelers who prefer a streamlined digital application process. This visa replaces the outdated visa-on-arrival system and is designed to eliminate delays and reduce extortion risks. Applicants receive approval within 48 hours—without needing to visit an embassy.

This e-visa system is part of President Tinubu’s broader strategy to attract foreign investment, boost tourism, and improve Nigeria’s global ease of doing business rankings. The e-visa is already standard practice in many countries worldwide.

Ongoing Diplomatic Engagement

Despite Nigeria’s continued goodwill—including offering e-visas to U.S. citizens—the United States has yet to offer the same option to Nigerians. However, the Federal Government remains committed to constructive dialogue. Senior Nigerian officials are in ongoing discussions with their U.S. counterparts to ensure visa policies reflect fairness, mutual respect, and long-standing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Tinubu administration reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening ties with the United States and resolving any concerns through transparent and respectful engagement.
