Nigeria Set for Historic Constitutional Reform Summit in Abuja

In a bold move to reshape Nigeria’s democratic future, The PATRIOTS in collaboration with the Nigerian Political Summit Group (NPSG) will host a high-level National Summit on the Future of Nigeria’s Constitutional Democracy from July 15 to 17, 2025, in Abuja.

The emergency constitutional dialogue will bring together respected elder statesmen, former Presidents, Governors, legal icons, civil society leaders, and private sector players to finalize and present a Draft Legislative Bill for a New Constitution of Nigeria to both the Presidency and the National Assembly.

Themed “Actualising a Constitutional Democracy That Works for All in Nigeria”, the summit seeks to replace the 1999 Constitution, widely criticized for centralizing power and neglecting federalism, with a people-centered and inclusive document.

Key dignitaries expected to speak include Chief Emeka Anyaoku (Summit Chair), Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, Gen. T.Y. Danjuma, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, Mallam Tanko Yakasai, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Comrade Joe Ajaero, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Femi Falana (SAN), and National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, among others.

The Summit Resolutions Committee will be led by constitutional lawyer Prof. Mike Ozekhome (SAN), while Otunba Gbenga Daniel and Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal serves as co-chairs of the Organising Committee.

The Draft Constitution is the outcome of nationwide consultations and stakeholder engagements, aiming to resolve long-standing issues around governance structure, resource control, electoral justice, institutional reforms, and minority protection.

According to Sir Olawale Okunniyi, Head of the Summit Joint Secretariat, the event is not just a political formality but a national turning point. He urged civil society, political leaders, the media, and all Nigerians to participate and support this initiative.

As the country confronts growing insecurity, economic hardship, and institutional decay, this summit offers a unique opportunity to build a more equitable, inclusive, and future-ready Nigeria through a new constitution that reflects the voice of its people.
