The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), representing retirees from key agencies such as NITEL, MTEL, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Federal Ministry of Works (FMW), and the Nigerian Railway Corporation, has taken to the streets to protest prolonged non-payment of entitlements.
The pensioners say they are owed up to 35 months of arrears, including the unpaid ₦35,000 palliative promised by the government and a ₦32,000 pension increment. Many lamented the severe hardship caused by the delay, with some receiving less than ₦30,000 monthly as pension — an amount they say cannot cover basic living expenses in today’s economy.
Speaking during the protest, the leader of the group, Comrade Mukaila Ogunbote, urged the Federal Government to set a specific date for the payment of all outstanding entitlements. He stressed that the delay has pushed many retirees into poverty, with some unable to afford food, medication, or shelter.
The NUP insists that prompt payment of pension arrears and palliatives is not a privilege but a right owed to those who served the nation diligently.
