Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has described Nigeria’s democratic journey as a key stabilising force in West Africa, offering a strong model amid rising political instability across the subregion.
In a Democracy Day statement issued by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, Tuggar emphasized that while several West African nations are experiencing military takeovers and governance disruptions, Nigeria continues to stand firm on democratic principles through consistent elections, peaceful power transitions, and respect for constitutional processes.
> “Nigeria is a beacon of democratic hope and regional stability,” Tuggar stated. “Though our institutions face challenges, they remain resilient. As democracy weakens in some parts of West Africa, Nigeria continues to show that rule of law, credible elections, and active civic engagement are vital for peace and development.”
The Foreign Minister’s remarks follow recent moves by ECOWAS to curb the rise in coups across member states like Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Niger. Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to regional peacebuilding and insisted that democratic governance must remain central to ECOWAS’ approach to conflict resolution.
Political observers note that Nigeria’s influence—being Africa’s most populous country and largest economy—plays a crucial role in shaping West Africa’s political future.
Tuggar also reflected on Nigeria’s historic leadership in defending democracy within the subregion, citing the country’s involvement in peacekeeping missions in Liberia and Sierra Leone, as well as recent ECOWAS efforts aimed at restoring civilian rule.
> “Democracy goes beyond our borders,” Tuggar said. “Nigeria’s democratic resilience is a strategic contribution to regional peace and progress. Our journey strengthens democracy across the continent.”
He concluded by commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to economic revival and national stability, expressing optimism that the reforms being undertaken will lay the foundation for shared prosperity.
