The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, is intensifying efforts to protect rail infrastructure with the arrest and prosecution of a suspected railway vandal in Lagos, as authorities reinforce zero tolerance for acts that threaten public safety and national assets.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the latest development highlights the Corporation’s ongoing crackdown on vandalism across the rail network, particularly in high-traffic corridors within Lagos where incidents have raised safety concerns.
The suspect, identified as Bashiru Hafeez, a 32-year-old male, is apprehended during a routine security patrol carried out by personnel attached to the Mobolaji Johnson Train Station in Ebute-Metta.
The arrest takes place on March 26, 2026, when vigilant officers from Multi Eye Security Services intercept the suspect within the rail corridor, acting on suspicious movement observed during patrol operations.
At the time of arrest, the suspect is found in possession of fifteen pandrol clips, essential iron components used to secure railway tracks and maintain structural stability.
Railway officials explain that pandrol clips play a vital role in holding rails firmly to sleepers, and their removal significantly increases the risk of track displacement and potential train derailment.
Experts warn that tampering with such infrastructure not only disrupts operations but also endangers passengers, railway workers, and surrounding communities.
According to Mediaplusng.com, the suspect is immediately handed over to the Nigerian Railway Police Command for further investigation and necessary legal action following his apprehension.
Authorities confirm that the suspect is arraigned before a competent court in Lagos, where proceedings are initiated in line with existing laws governing infrastructure protection.
The court subsequently remands the suspect at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending further hearing, with the case adjourned to April 24, 2026.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, reiterates the Corporation’s firm stance against vandalism, describing such acts as economic sabotage with far-reaching consequences.
Dr. Opeifa notes that vandalism of railway assets undermines government investments, disrupts transportation systems, and poses direct threats to human lives.
The NRC leadership commends the vigilance and professionalism of the security team whose prompt response leads to the arrest, emphasizing the importance of sustained surveillance.
The Corporation assures that it will continue to work closely with security agencies to identify, track, and prosecute individuals and groups involved in vandalizing railway infrastructure.
Dr. Opeifa issues a strong warning that anyone found culpable in damaging railway property or trading in stolen rail materials will face the full weight of the law.
The NRC calls on members of the public to remain alert and report suspicious activities around railway corridors, noting that community support is essential in safeguarding national infrastructure.
Officials emphasize that the railway system remains a critical component of Nigeria’s transportation network, contributing to economic growth, mobility, and national development.
The Corporation reassures passengers and stakeholders of its unwavering commitment to maintaining safe, secure, and efficient rail services across the country.
As enforcement efforts intensify, authorities maintain that protecting railway infrastructure remains a shared responsibility, requiring cooperation between government agencies and the public.
The NRC reiterates that operations targeting vandalism will continue nationwide, with increased surveillance and stricter enforcement aimed at preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s rail system.
