PANDEF Appoints Kanu Agabi to Lead Reconciliation Committee on Rivers Political Crisis

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) sets up a high-level reconciliation committee to find a political solution to the ongoing feud between the Governor of Rivers State and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kanu Agabi, heads the committee as tensions continue to impact governance and development in the state.

According to Mediaplusng.com, PANDEF says the move reflects growing concern within the Niger Delta over the prolonged political standoff and its wider implications for peace, stability, and effective leadership in Rivers State. The group stresses that dialogue remains the most sustainable path to resolving the dispute.

The committee receives a clear mandate to engage all relevant stakeholders and move beyond the two principal figures at the centre of the crisis. Its terms of reference include identifying other key political actors involved in the dispute, reaching out to them, facilitating structured dialogue, and recommending practical steps toward reconciliation.

Mediaplusng.com reports that PANDEF believes the crisis requires an inclusive approach that addresses underlying political interests and grievances. The forum says reconciliation can only succeed if all parties feel heard and are willing to commit to peace and mutual respect.

National Chairman of PANDEF, Ambassador Godknows Igali, expresses deep concern over the situation in Rivers State. He says the continued conflict weakens leadership focus and diverts attention from governance, service delivery, and economic development.

Igali notes that Rivers State plays a strategic role in the Niger Delta and the national economy, making political stability in the state a matter of regional and national importance. He warns that prolonged tension could undermine investor confidence and slow development projects.

PANDEF explains that the reconciliation committee will operate independently and fairly, guided by principles of justice, dialogue, and respect for democratic institutions. The forum urges all parties to cooperate fully with the committee and place the interests of Rivers State above personal or political differences.

Stakeholders across the Niger Delta welcome the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention. Many believe the credibility and experience of Kanu Agabi will help build trust and open communication channels among rival political camps.

The forum also calls on elders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and political leaders in Rivers State to support the reconciliation process. PANDEF says collective responsibility is required to restore calm and ensure effective governance.

As consultations begin, PANDEF expresses optimism that the committee’s work will lead to lasting peace and renewed focus on development in Rivers State. The forum reiterates its commitment to unity, dialogue, and stability across the Niger Delta region.
