The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken another turn as the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Senator Samuel Anyanwu has announced the suspension of the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum.
According to reports by Mediaplusng.com, the suspension was announced after a meeting of the factional NWC members who accused Damagum of incompetence, misappropriation of party funds, and pursuing selfish interests that allegedly contradict the values of the PDP. The decision marks a major escalation in the internal battle for control within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Also affected by the suspension are the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, and the Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, among other key officials. Senator Anyanwu stated that all suspended officers will face the party’s disciplinary committee for further investigation and possible sanctions.
As gathered by Mediaplusng.com, the action by the Anyanwu-led faction is seen as a counter move to earlier decisions made by another faction loyal to Damagum, deepening the division within the PDP. Political analysts believe this power struggle may threaten the party’s unity if reconciliation efforts are not urgently pursued.
The PDP, once Nigeria’s ruling party, has been battling internal leadership challenges since its loss of power in 2015. With multiple factions emerging, observers say restoring internal democracy and discipline is key if the party hopes to regain public trust and political relevance.
